里親には二つの役割があります。

生みの親が何らかの理由で子どもを育てられない時に、

短期のお預かりでは親戚のおばちゃん、おじちゃんのように、

18歳までの長期に育てる場合は「育て親」として、

子どもの生活を支える役割があります。

親権を持たないので、法的に家族になる養子縁組とは違います。
